The Good Stuff

Were yo brought up with “ the good front room”? The room where visitors were seen? The good sofa and chairs which were for the vistors.

Did you have the good delph brought out for the visitors and on special occassions? How about the good cutlery taken out from the canteen and used with the good delph for the visitors?

I was brought up with those items and those ideas. I found myself to an extent keeping to that thinking on getting married. It wasn’t until i was given a present of pastry forks which included a note “not to be kept for the visitors” that I looked at thie concept of good household ware.

During the last few months I have started on a clear out of “things” which have not been used. We cam across a box of delph which had been bought in the early 1990’s and to date had not been used. I can remember buying the table set but except perhaps on two occassions the table ware had never been used. It was a total waste of money and looking at it I knew that it was never going to see the light of day again in our house.

Then we came across some beautiful table linen which I had totally forgotten about and which could not be used as we no longer had a round dinner table.

So I have now decided that the “good table ware” which we have kept is going to be used regularly. it is not going to be kept for good use or to be passed on to the next generation. It is going to be used and enjoyed. It was made to be used. So using it is happening right now. It actually feels good using it.
